February Currently {Linky}

I am linking up with Oh' Boy 4th Grade for February Currently!!!!

Not really to much in the background!!  Just the T.V. going and Shark Tank is on.   The girls are already in the bed and the Hubs is at a friend's house.  So it is pretty quite around here {a rare moment, I might add}!

The Hubs and I will finally get a date night tomorrow!  It is our first one in months and it is very much needed.  We actually had it scheduled a few weeks ago, but then the flu attacked our household.  I am so happy for some grown up couple time.  I am not even sure what the plans are yet, but as long as it does not involve kids running around me in circles I am happy!!!

I have really been a slacker with blogging lately.  Between everyone getting sick at my own house and this cold weather keeping me trapped in my classroom ALL day long with kiddos, I am completely worn out by the end of the day.  I wish I could have had a few snow days.  I live in the northern part of Louisiana so the snow went to the south of me.  I was so bummed, I was hoping for a few days off.  It has  just been cold enough that we can't have any outside recess and if it is not too cold then it is raining.  I am ready for warmer weather.

My "Thinking" above leads into my "Wanting".  I am so over all this cold weather.   I am ready for a little warm up.   I know most of my buddies up north are probably a little more use to this colder weather, but down here this is really, really  unusually cold for us.  Don't get me wrong we have our occasional cold days, but it feels like it is just lingering.  And to think it is only February!!!

I have been doing fairly well with all my New Year's Resolutions, except working out.   I could count on both hands, ok probably just one, the amount of times I have worked out.  I really need to try and get more motivated.  I am going to blame it on all this weather and being cooped up with kids all day - ha!!!   I know that is such a copout, and I was just joking.  I totally take all the blame.   Well February is a new month and a new start.

2 Truths and a Fib:

1.  I have one foot that is slightly bigger than the other.  When I buy shoes, my right shoe is always really tight until I stretch it out with normal wear.
2.   I am not big on eating any sweets.  Don't get me wrong, I love the occasional piece of cake or candy, but I really have to be in the mood for it.  It is not one of my weaknesses.  Now carbs on the other hand, that is a different story.
3.  My fib:  I am pretty good at looking like I have it together {most of the time}.  People always tell me how organized I am.   But the truth:   I am really organized, but sometimes I feel like I am running in circles.   I just keep smiling and going because as a mom, wife, and teacher that is just what we do!!!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!  Be sure to link up, I can't wait to read your Currently!!!

Place Value Freebie & Flu

I spoke a little too soon or may even jinx myself in my Five for Friday post, but whatever I did it stinks because the FLU has officially hit the Knefely household.  My youngest has the flu.  She seems a lot better today.  However, yesterday was horrible!!  She ran high fever all day long and slept most of the day.  There were a few times I was starting to panic a little with her fever so high, I even put her in a cool bath a few times to help drop her temperature.  My pediatrician told me to expect this, but as a mom knowing it is coming and seeing it actually happen are two different things.  Finally late last night her fever seemed to break and this morning she seems much much better!  Her fever is down now just congestion with a nagging cough.  I think we caught her flu just early enough to get the Tamiflu in her system to help stop it in its track.  The entire household is on Tamiful as a preventive measure.

Our area is having a major flu outbreak {I may be using this word a little extreme, but this is what it feels like}.  The local schools have had so may sick kids lately, my school included.  The news is constantly talking about how many people are infected with the flu in our area.   So I was already a little worried that it was headed our way.   Plus when we left the doctors office it was like searching for a needle in a hay stack to find a pharmacy that had enough Tamiflu in stock.  Hopefully the worst is behind us.  She seems much better today!!

Now on to school related talk.  I have a little freebie for you that I think you will love.  It is quick matching game that would be perfect to use in centers or to have for early finishers.  We are getting ready to start working on place value up 1,000 and with Valentine's Day around the corner what a perfect time to use this little matching game.  All you have to do is print and cut the hearts in half.   I have provided an answer key so the student(s) can self check their work.  Visit my TpT shop to download this free game {click on images below}!  I hope you can find a way to use it in your classroom.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!!!  I hope you have a great week!!!

Five for Friday

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday!

SUBTRACTION W/REGROUPING!!!!   This is a picture of my page that I use to follow along with kiddos while teaching subtraction with regrouping.  We have been working on this skill for about two weeks now.  Most of them have it down.   We take a test today so I am a little anxious to see how they will  do.  I think most will do well.  Even when it is time to move to the next skill I will keep revisiting subtraction with regrouping since this can sometimes be a tricky little number for 7-8 year olds.   Practice makes perfect - right??

This is a picture of my youngest helping my mom cook New Year's Day lunch!!!   She loves to help cook.  She insisted on wearing an apron just like her Memaw.  They were making fried chicken - yum!

We finished up our MLK writings yesterday.  I think they turned out really well.  My class does a great job of getting their ideas and thoughts down in complete sentences.   Now if I could just get their proofreading skills up to par!!!   This cute writing craftivity and with other matching printables can be found in my TpT shop!!!

This week was winter benchmark time for DIBELS.   We help administer DIBELS at our school, but the parish also brings in outside administrators to help as well.   After hearing the same story for what felt like the 100th time, I was so bored.  I went back to my class and spoke to them again about the importance of reading with expression.  Kids are really bad about reading with a  monotone.  I think overall our school scores were about average of where they should be.  We defenitly could work on our retell a little more, especially capturing the main idea of a passage.  What type of benchmark testing does your school use?   Leave me a comment, I would love to hear from you.

Here is hoping that everyone has a great weekend and a healthy one at that.  This past week my school has had what seems like every viral or bacterial infection roll through it.  Not to mention the flu is sweeping through our school and city like crazy.  I am praying that my family and I don't get the flu this year.  It seems like a really nasty strain this year!   Our local news reported that the hospitals were overflowing with flu patients.  I am constantly reminding my girls to wash their hands.  I have also noticed that I have been washing and using Germ X  a little more than normal in my class too.

That about wraps it up for me!!   Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek.   I {heart} comments and followers!!!!

One Word Writing Project

I have been back in the swing of things for three full days {hump day already}!!  Monday was a teacher workday for me.  We spent the morning in meetings covering the usual teacher stuff.  The second half of my day was spent working with my grade level and planning for the rest of the week.   The students returned on Tuesday {yippee}!!!

After spending the month of December in what felt like total chaos I spent a good part of my Tuesday morning going over the rules again.  The week before Christmas break really felt crazy with all the different activities going on, but this week we were back to business as usual.  I must admit I love having structure.  It makes my life feel like it runs a lot smoother.  It give a hats off to you ladies that can fly by the seat of your pants all the the time.  I am good at the occasional "let's just wing it", but I much rather have structure.

So, after going over rules I decided to borrow Jennifer's idea over at Mrs. Laffin's Laughings and using the One Word Project.   I know many of you participated in the link up with Tara at 4th Grade Frolics where you picked your 2014 word you were going to try and follow.   Jennifer came up with a great idea to use this in her 4th grade class as a writing assignment.   After reading her blog post {click to read here} I decided I wanted to do this with my class as well.

I must tell you that I teach second grade, so I really had to explain why we choose one word.  We even provided examples and discussed in detail as a class.  Then we  brainstormed some possible ideas and made a web chart with our ideas.  I was a little nervous, because I wasn't sure if they would grasp the idea.  But they did!!!!  I showed the class the video that Jennifer had made and they loved reading the words as they popped across the screen.  Then they went to to work on writing their  own paragraph for their 2014 word.  They turned out better than I thought.   They came up with great responses for 7 and 8 year olds.   I have to give a shout out to Jennifer for  sharing this excellent idea.

If your looking for a great writing activity I would definitely recommend this idea.  Be sure to stop by Mrs. Laffin's Laughings for all the details.  Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!!!

Monday Made It

I am linking up with Tara at Fourth Grade Frolics for Monday Made It.  I  must admit not to much was made at the Knefely household over Christmas break.  I spent my first week running around and then my second week I was lazy.  I did manage to finish my mini unit up on Martin Luther King Jr.  It has a really simple writing craftivity and some printables.  I plan on using this with some other materials and books that I already have in my class room.  It will make a great supplement to what I am already using.

Next up … I actually finished this little number last month, but I did not link up.  Since I did not link up I decided to tag it on with this month.  I think this is my favorite unit I have made.   All of the clip art is centered around Melondheadz 80's kids {being a kid from the 80's, it was love at first sight}.  This set is loaded with games and printables to teach nouns, verbs, and adjectives.   I have used some of the games covering nouns and verbs in my classroom and the students loved it.  Be sure to check it out in my TpT shop.

Last … I did manage to scrapbook a couple of pages using kits from Out on a Limb Scrapbooking.  I just can't get into digital scrapbooking yet.  I know how to do it, but there is something that I love about manipulating the papers and pictures around.  I am still scrapbooking the ole' fashion way.  Sometimes I will come up with my own ideas, and other times I will will by kits like these below.  In a kit you still have to put everything together and chalk all the paper if you want it to have the best look.   Although I have the pages made up, I still need to get the pictures printed and get them put on the pages.   I am behind on my scrapbooking, but that is ok I make sure I always keep what pictures I do have printed in order and organized.   This way when I do get time to scrapbook I can just make a page or just put a picture on a page and it is ready to go!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!  Be sure to link up.  I always love looking at all the neat ideas that everyone comes up with!
