Counting the Days Down

I am actually stuck at home today with pink eye.  In all my thirty-seven years, I have never had pink eye. At first I thought it must be allergies or a sty on my eye, but by day two I knew it was something else.  The weirdest thing is that my actual eye never really turned pink just the lid all the way around it.  Anyway after trying to hold back from scratching it {it really itches} I decided to occupy my time and  catch you up on what has been going on in my class.

We are definitely on the the downhill slide.  We only have two weeks left.  My last day will be May 22nd and I am so ready for summer.  I spent this past weekend on the lake with my family and I can't wait to spend more weeks and weekends ahead the same way.  We have been really busy in my class too!  It is so crazy trying to squeeze everything in the last few weeks.

Up first we just finished up our plant unit which the kids loved.  Instead of planting the seeds in soil, we grow them in paper towels and Ziploc bags.  This way we can make observations every couple of days and really notice the changes in the roots, stems, and leaves.  We even made a foldable book to go along with our bean seeds.  It took about two weeks for the bean seeds to grow enough to see roots and leaves.  The kids had a blast completing this activity.

We finished up reading the novel, "Ramona Quimby, Age 8".  I couldn't tell you who loved the book more, me or the kids.   I have a whole novel study unit that I made to go with this  book and I hope to have the final touches on it very soon.   It has several crafts and activities that I made to go with the book, plus all of the questions and vocabulary we used for each chapter.  We made an egg craftivity to go with the chapter "Hard-boiled Egg Fad" when Ramona cracks a raw egg on her head:  I had some really creative drawings.   I love the bottom picture!  I think the student did a great job drawing the yolk dripping down Ramona and off of the egg halves.

Since we are finished with our "Ramona" book we are currently reading my all time favorite book, "Charlotte's Web".  I love this book!!!  It does not matter how many times I read it I can never seem to get enough, and I always tear up when Wilbur loses his best friend.   I love how this book teaches the importance that friendship can come in all shapes and sizes.

Well that about catches you up on what's been going on it my class {besides all of my teacher paper work/reports that have to be turned in for the end of the year -yikes the pile is growing}!  Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!  I {heart} comments and followers!!

  1. Oh no! Pink eye is the WORST. I'll probably get it now just because I typed that! I hope you feel better and enjoy your last two weeks of school! xo

  2. I second that...pink eye is no fun! I had it in BOTH eyes when I went to Disney World for the first time. It started in one eye, and then (being 6 years old at the time) I spread it to the other eye. My mom actually had to bribe me to take the eyedrops by keeping me from going on a ride until I got them done (the only way it would get better was to have those blasted eyedrops)! Hope yours clears up quickly.

  3. I love the egg pictures!! Those are two of my favorite books, too. A teacher was just telling me about having pink eye recently. She compared it to having glass in your eye- eeks!! Hope you get some relief!!

    1. This was my first year reading "Ramona Quimby"! I am so glad that I did, the kids were really interested in the book and many of them wanted to know what other books were in the series. I guess if you sparked their interest, then that is all you can ask for!! Thanks for stopping by.

    1. I have the usual questions and vocab. that go with each chapter, but I also have some different writing and drawing activities for certain chapters too. I am at home so I can't remember the exact chapter, but I think it is chapter 4 when the author goes into describing the barn into detail … I always have the kids to draw a layout of the barn on a large sheet of manilla paper. But the catch is they have to draw it like a map, using a map key and a map scale. They have to draw the animals in their areas, the hay and food in an area, and Templeton in his area. This is always a favorite activity the kids enjoying working on. We use rulers to measure out the different areas on our map so it will match up with our map scales. Of course if you are teaching a lower grade or group this would have to be adjusted because it takes time to do and can be hard for some of younger students. We also have "fair" food and watch the movie after we have read the book. We have popcorn and cotton candy just like Fern and Avery when they went to the county fair. Then after the movie we compare and contrast the movie to the book. I have also in the past let the kids take a poll {not just in our class, but with their family members and friends} who their favorite character is. Then we come back and do a graphing activity with the characters. You can also assign each group/student a particular spider and have them to research it. I usually do this a a group or partner activity and then have them to list 5-6 facts about their spider on poster board cut in half. Then they also have to draw and illustrate the parts of a spider. These are just a few of the activities I have done. I change it up from year to year because I am always finding new things to do and so many people will post great ideas. Since I am running a little behind this year, we will most likely will not get to our spider research this year. But if you have time my students in the past have always enjoyed working on that activity. I hope I have given you a few good ideas!!! Let me know of any fun or neat ideas you are using too!!
